Upgradable Memory
First things first — you should be looking for mp3 players which have the ability to add memory.
Functionality
Depending on what you are looking for in an mp3 player, the range of functions available are folder navigation, FM / voice recording, FM tuner, equalizer, repeat mode, adjustable speed playing, adjustable recording bit-rate, lyrics display, direct line-in recording.
Portability
Portability is signified by size and weight : smaller and lighter = better portability.
Durability
As with all electronic devices, reasonable care is always encouraged. If you will be using an mp3 player while exercising, you may want to avoid players with internal hard drives. This is because constant jostling or dropping may cause damage to such units.
File transfer mode
For faster file transfer, look for mp3 players with USB 1.1 or USB 2.0 capabilities.
Battery type
Rechargeable batteries are more cost effective in the long run. An alternative would be AAA alkaline batteries which are not rechargeable but easily available off the shelf.
Interface
Fiddle around with the controls and buttons to ensure that the interface and controls are intuitive for you.
Sound Quality
Most mp3 players have decent sound quality but as a rule of thumb, the signal-to-noise ratio should not be less than 85dB.
LCD Panel
The mp3 player should have a backlit LCD player large enough to display information such as name of album and artist, track information, volume and remaining battery life.
Upgradeable Firmware
Most manufacturers update their firmware – built-in software in mp3 players - time and again thus adding new functions. As a user, you should ensure that an mp3 player is upgradeable in this manner in order to maximize the functions of the player.

Audio Files

What is MP3?

MP3 (MPEG1 audio Layer 3) is original sound data from a CD, shrunk by a factor of 12 without sacrificing sound quality.

Layer 3 uses perceptual audio coding and psychoacoustic compression to remove all superfluous information (more specifically, the redundant and irrelevant parts of a sound signal. The stuff the human ear doesn't hear anyway).

What is WMA?

An audio format developed by Microsoft for the compression of digital audio content. The method is similar to that of MP3, the only difference being it achieves a comparably good sound at lower compression rates.

Generally speaking, an MP3 compression at a rate of 128 kbps roughly compares in quality to a WMA compression with a rate of 96 kbps. This brings the advantage of a smaller file size. You can also hear music for a longer amount of time given the same memory capacity.
